Inspiration is a tricky (and amazing!) thing. You get your posts scheduled (just like I showed you in my post on BLOGGING: HOW TO BE ORGANISED AND PLAN YOUR POSTS), and then it (aka the "muse") knocks on your mind's door and you know exactly that this material needs to see the world ASAP. This time it came from quite an unusual source - an email from a brand. It was one of those great emails where they use your actual name (major bonus if it doesn't start with "Dear Miel" - it happened). They also listed posts they loved and explained why they were interested in me. I was very thankful for such a professional approach. I was also happy to find out that my blog was valued, and what's more important - for what it is, not in a material way. I decided to share with you TWO posts: Part 1 - How To Get Noticed By Brands and Part 2 - How To Work With The Brands. This topic is all the rage among bloggers (especially new ones), yet it can be pretty sensitive. About sensitivity - this post is NOT going to include: a) tips on how to get attention of the brands (for quick cash/freebies) or b) ways to promote yourself (for quick cash/freebies). I do not support that kind of way of running your blog. Instead I'd like to share my genuine and no nonsense advice on how to get noticed by brands in order to motivate yourself to grow and take your blog to a more professional, fulfilling and happier place. Let's face it, you work hard enough to deserve to be noticed.
I'm about to hit you with some shocking stats. Just the other day I read somewhere that a new blog is created every half a second. Let's do the math - that's 172,800 new blogs are being created DAILY. This number is pretty overwhelming to process but don't let it scare you. One blogger once said to me: "I'm so overwhelmed - there are just too many bloggers. I'm never going to be noticed the way "big" bloggers are". I did comfort her making sure to lift her spirits up a bit and encouraged her to keep doing "her thing". At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter how many of "us" are out there already nor how well or badly others get on. All existing bloggers shouldn't throw in the towel and give up. It actually means the opposite - keep doing your thing. That sweet place in the sun has to be earned and not given as a freebie. So how can you get noticed by brand and why should you?
When I first went to the United States as a teenage exchange student, I lived in a dorm. Our dorm manager often used to say when she wasn't happy with us: "Check yourself before you wreck yourself". As annoying as it sounded back then, it just kind of stuck with me. Giving yourself a little reality check from time to time is a pretty healthy thing. What were your motives when you started your blog? Have they changed as you went on? Person's motives are more evident and transparent than anyone might think. While the desire to work with brands might be strong, you first need to work hard on your blog and grow along with it. Making money from your blog is not a bad thing (kudos if you're doing that!) but in order to stay true to yourself, your readers and potential business partners, know your real "value". Not only your audience will know if you're "real", but brands and businesses will get a good feel what kind of person is behind a blog.
We all have heard this quote. It doesn't mean that a person isn't capable of producing a masterpiece of a blog post every day. It all depends on the time we have, determination and the content we put out there. Each of us can also make a mistake and it's OK (it's actually even great because we learn from them!). Once my hubby, who reads my blog and always encourages me, asked me: "That was a quickly-written post, right?" His bold question and sincerity hit me and I knew exactly which post he was talking about. We were in a massive rush before our summer holiday. I was a big-time blogging noob but I didn't want to leave my blog behind without a single update. So I decided I could just easily produce 3 posts on the day before the trip. While some can do it easily, I know we all have different lifestyles and writing / editing style. You love your blog, right? Take time to write, edit and proofread. Great brands will notice your potential by the posts you write and share.
Who can
represent your blog more than you? The answer is obvious. Every blogger
searches for inspiration everywhere and, sadly, some can get carried away.
Without trying or even wanting to be a copycat,
there's a possibility to become one. That's why it's great to filter all the
ideas you might get from others. Ask yourself if it's a real you writing it and
also be aware of copyright and the legal side of the blogging world. Another
part of being honest on your blog is by writing genuine posts giving your sincere opinion. Either it's a review, a haul, a how-to post or your OOTD, keep it 100 + 1% you. Not only this way of running your blog will give you the voice others will be able to recognize among thousands, but also brands will know that they are dealing with a creative, trust-worthy and authentic individual.
No idea why it's taken me ages to create a "contact" tab (I might still tweak it a few times). At the same time, my email has been displayed on my Twitter and Instagram from the get-go. Make sure you have some sort of social media presence (whatever channel you're comfortable with) and get your email address out there. Also, create a blog-related one (for example, mine is mielandmint<at>gmail.com - you get an idea). If your email is quiet or you get offers that are not up your street, there's no shame in contacting brands or businesses you're passionate to work with. They might be small or big - it's your choice. Be professional, polite and clear. Explain who you are and what your blog stands for + why you are interested in working with them.
Last week in one Twitter chat there was a question asked: "What would you like brands to change about their approach to you?" Probably 95% of all the bloggers replied - "I want them to give me a chance not depending on the number of followers". It is true, that number does matter. Yet we shouldn't be after it simply because then "we will be given a chance". Go back and apply tip #1, 2 & 3, and eventually you will see that number go up bit by bit. Yes, it isn't easy to be heard and acknowledged when you are still growing but the main thing is you ARE growing. Not just the number of like-minded amazing people who are there to support you, YOU are growing as a blogger, as a writer, as an expert, as a brand. Keep growing but don't obsess (nor get upset) over the stats. Quality content, social media presence and engagement with readers will do the job for you. Great (small or big) businesses and brands out there will recognize that and will provide you with an opportunity to show yourself.
I hope you enjoyed this post, either you are a blogger who's been around for a while or a new kid on the block learning your way around the blogosphere. At the end of the day, we are all "newbies" and learning constantly because blogging is the ever-changing world on its own.
P.S.
This post, like I mentioned in my little intro, is not written to promote the behaviour by which some consider bloggers rude, money-hungry or fake. Neither yours truly nor you would ever want to be associated with those words, right? This post was written to help to understand what businesses are looking for and get the main point across -
work hard, stay positive and grow along with your blog :)

A great approach, and spoken right after my own heart. The "Hi Dear, I love your blog and want to you to write a post about wedding dresses..." eMails annoy me beyond reason, but one honest and personal request can really brighten your day.
ReplyDeleteStats are just numbers, and yes, it is hard to get noticed among the many others out there. But you created your blog to show your personality, and sooner or later the people really interested in your way of writing/talking/taking pictures will find you. And that is worth much more then 50 "Nice post, please visit my blog"-comments that amp up your stats.
Linda, Libra, Loca: Beauty, Baby and Backpacking
Have you ever been approached as "Hi Linda"? lol It honestly made me laugh once when I got a message saying "Hi Miel" (aka "Hello Honey") :)
DeleteI couldn't agree more with you. Stats are there, they are important but the true worth will speak louder :) Way to stay positive!
Also, massive thanks for your always genuine comments, Anne <3

This is a really great post with some really insightful tips :)
DeleteIt's important to establish brand/blogger relationships that really work, the brand understands your needs as a blogger and the blogger understands their needs as a brand. It's great when you both work together to create something really amazing too.
One of the most important things brands and PR's should think about when approaching bloggers is to reach out to people who are honest, provide great quality content. Look at bloggers who engage with their followers for example and are active within their Social Media.
It's important for brands to realise it's not all about stats, blogging is so much more than that and I feel that sometimes this is something that is often missed. Quality not quantity I feel :)
It's important to be personable when you blog and have your own unique tone of voice and having a friendly and positive attitude, and of course great images go a long way :)
Lovely post and thanks for writing it.
Laura www.shehearts.net xx
Thanks so much, Laura.
DeleteI couldn't agree more with what you said. Bloggers who love what they do, message that they put out there, amazing things they share + their engagement with the readers and other bloggers speaks so much louder than any number.
To be honest, I had a situation a few times when I went to a certain blog and was amazed how in the world they have soooo many followers yet their connection with readers isn't even there. Puzzling.
However, it's nice to come across blogs and not only enjoy things they are writing about and showing us, but also get a feel of what the blogger is about :)
Thanks for the great feedback, girlie!

Awww Nadia another FAB post as usual!! You really converse with us as readers and your posts are so fabulously written!! I definitely agree with staying true and not becoming greedy .. It really upsets me when I posts that are rushed .. All in the name of getting some freebies! Blogging is SO much more than that .. I also have been given the opportunity to work with brands, but not just to be sent freebies.. But instead have a fantastic work relationship .. And I love that so much !! I also think there is nothing wrong with contacting brands .. It's a fab way to network with them too! Great tips too my love!

Thanks so much, sweetheart! :) I am really glad you enjoyed it. I definitely wanted to give good tips but also make sure to remind us all to stick to the right motives and promote the term "blogger" in the good light :)
DeleteYou've done a great job working with brands so far hon and I am sure you will be approached more and more. Keep at it! I agree there is no shame in contacting them if you're truly passionate about what they have to offer and can't wait to share with others. Lots of love your way as well, girlie :)

This is a great post and comes at the perfect time for me. As a newbie, I am trying to gain loyal readers while finding my voice. Since I am not big enough to be approached yet, I have reached out to several smaller brands who I follow and interact with on social media and was pleasantly surprised that a couple of them are giving me a chance to work with them!!! I try to stay true to myself and post about things that are 100% me (like you said). I cant wait till your next post!
ReplyDeleteYou're definitely on the right track, Mary. Keep doing what you do and very soon you will see your blog becoming a 100% reflection of you and what you are about and after. Such a lovely blogger like you will get attention from some great brands, without a doubt! Most brands are an absolute delight to work with and I am so glad to hear about your positive experience, hon :)
DeletePart 2 will be more in-depth and practical as well - you will enjoy it ;)

Great post As a 'new kid on the block', I really enjoy blogging, I don't want to put pressure on myself to publish a post. I love testing products and sharing my honest opinion. I know I have long way to be 'big blogger', but I want that my followers, they follow me because they enjoy or like my post or me I didn't reach out yet any brands, but this post is really helpful Thank you girlie
ReplyDeleteI love what you said, J - "I really enjoy blogging" & "I love testing products and sharing my honest opinion" :) This is the way to run your blog, hon.
DeleteBeing honest, genuinely enjoying what you do is the key. I hope, if that's a goal or a perspective you're looking into, you will get great offers from brands coming your way.

Great list and explanation. I'm trying to find ways in growing my blog and its readership, and I found this to be a good reminder. I definitely find myself rushing a few posts, which I'm not proud of, and it shouldn't be that way. Looking forward to future parts to this topic :)
ReplyDeletewww.deasynoel.com
The main thing is, and what's absolutely incredible, is that you said it out loud, girlie. You admitted to yourself something was rushed. Then it motivates you to be better and produce something a lot more thought-through and top quality next time.
DeleteI am glad you enjoyed this post, and definitely can't wait to share Part 2 ;)

Really loved this honest and genuine post, Nadia :) You touched all of the key points, and I love how your tips aren't really a step-by-step, but more of an encouraging message to inspire others to not give up <3 It's difficult to grow the blog, especially if it's still new, but we're growing day by day, even if we can't see it yet. Thank you so much for sharing this post, dear, and I've definitely missed your blog over the past couple of days! Glad you're back! :D

I agree with everything you said! I think it's also very important to learn to say NO to some brands. Reviewing a Chinese prom dress e-store you've never even shopped at might give you some easy pocket money, but it might also damage your blog image. I'd rather not make those 30 euro today and preserve my integrity and maybe someday be able to get a real collaboration with a serious brand I believe in... But this is just my opinion! ;)
ReplyDeletehttp://carolinapage.eu
So true, Carolina :) I actually kept a few tips for my Part 2 and one of them is crucial - saying no. I will discuss it in more detail next week which, I think, will be great to read. You're so right, your blog's image is important and you can't really talk how amazing something is without never even trying it out.
DeleteI believe there are incredible small brands out there but I have to have faith in their product to start working with them. It takes time and learning to do it but it's possible :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts, hon.

Nadia, this is my favorite blog post that you have ever done! Not because I want to get noticed by brands, but because your tips are so authentic and you are working with brands for all the right reasons! I 100% love the fact that you are promoting doing your own thing, not changing your blog to fit what is popular. This was so well thought out, perfectly written and truly, truly a positive message on how to work with brands. This was so refreshing to see! LOVE this...much love your way my beautiful friend! ReplyDeleteAwww, thank you Kim. Hearing that from you is so amazing, I really appreciate the feedback sweetie. Interesting article, it raises some real questions (I got here through your comment on Anne's blog).
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that there's nothing wrong with turning a blog into a source of income, and why not a self-sustained business, I have a problem with a trend I've seen emerging in the past couple years: the idea that you should build your blog considering it as a business from the start, the only goal being to make money.
I'm seeing more and more articles and posts about how everyone should start a blog as a business, how it's fairly easy and lucrative, giving (ridiculous) tips about how to succeed fast. I have yet to see a blog built on that model that looks even remotely authentic - they should be called websites and not blogs really.
What's sad is that a whole industry has developed with people charging for their advice, e-books, courses and whatnot targeted at these aspiring blogging entrepreneurs. I can only imagine the amount of money wasted and the number of failed attempts at building a sound business...
My take on this (and I realize it's just my opinion and other people's might differ) is that the blog should come first, and once the blogger has found their voice, has a better idea of what they want to do and which direction to take the blog, has started to find an audience, then monetizing it is the next possible step.
Beaumiroir
That is exactly the message behind this post, girl. I hope you were able to see it.
DeleteWhile I understand that blogging has changed comparing to a few years ago, this post doesn't promote becoming commercial. It is also not a guide or a step-by-step plan to be successful financially. What I tried to do there is to take us all, and especially young bloggers, back to where it all begins - the core which is your blog. As for finding your voice, I did link this post with one of my previous ones on blogging.
I see what you mean when you say there is a trend. Yes, there is absolutely a trend and we cannot change that. But with this post I am reminding (or at least tried to remind) why we all should blog in the first place. If we work hard on our blog, produce high quality content, spread a positive message, grow with the blog, the recognition will come whether the blogger wants or not because that's the way things are at the present time. The choice is always ours: keep your blog private/no collabs/no monetizing or put it out there. There's also the golden middle between those two. Everyone has to make the decision on their own as to their blog's future.
xox
Oh I didn't mean to say that you were a proponent of the monetize-your-blog-before-you-start-it trend, sorry if that's what my comment seemed to suggest.
DeleteIn fact I think you're giving very sensible advice!
These are really good tips Nadia darling ( or should I start calling you Miel hehehe :D so funny)! Every blogger should read this.
ReplyDeleteI'd say I'm interested in numbers and stats and they usually do make me very happy. But I'm not obsessed with them and I don't set goals on how many followers I want to gain this month or that year. I think it's so silly. I think people will follow if they want to and by recruiting followers you don't have a genuine audience, which in my opinion is the best. Comments like follow 4 follow make me sometimes see red and especially the twitter messages via crowdfire etc. Instead a lovely and honest comment will make at least me check out the commentor's blog too :)
As for brands, of course it's cool to get noticed by them. But I totally agree with you that you should totally agree with the things you write about the product or brand. I think people read blogs because they're a place for honest opinions and experience.
Thanks for the great post babe <3 You're the best !
Emma xxx

You can no problem call me Miel, girlie. Haha, no please don't :D
DeleteI like what you mean by being glad the numbers grow but not getting obsessed about them. Numbers simply mean that your blog is liked, appreciated and people actually enjoy it - which is one of the main reasons why we blog. To share, to connect, to write, to show support to others, to discover new things, to learn and to grow.
As for the fake followers, it's sad to see some people "buying" them. I'm not sure who they think it will benefit. I'd rather spend a year (or more) getting there in a honest way. Honesty is the key when it comes to reviews especially.
Glad you enjoyed this post, sweetheart. Lots of love your way!!!

Great post Nadia! It's so important to stay yourself through it and I really don't think it would be as fun otherwise, a part of it is simply to feel proud of what you create! And even though quality is important it's also important to remember that not every single one of your posts has to be the best thing you've ever created - especially if you blog once or more a week because that is impossible to live up to and you just end up putting a lot of pressure on yourself! The beauty of it is really to do your own thing and have your own little internet corner! :)
ReplyDeleteFilippa ⎮ Always a Dot
I think you are right, hon. Each blog is different because there is a different unique personality behind it. Therefore, we all do what we want/feel/must be doing and shouldn't feel pressure "producing" content unless there is a goal of "making" it in the blogosphere. Nevertheless, it's great to work on yourself and see how far your self-development takes you :)
Deletexox
Great post, lovely! You pointed out some important topics. There are so many blogs created everyday but not many lasts for long time, it is all about the will. People forget the main reason why they start the blog at the first place, stats are just numbers and if you enjoy what you're doing without being noticed then keep doing what you like.
ReplyDeleteWork hard and you will get the result, this is what I want to believe in. Some people are lucky to be noticed straight away however some have to work really hard to get to where they are.
Hope all is going well for you, hun! xx
www.elabellaworld.com
Thank you so much, sweetie! I think it's a very individual matter and each blogger is unique because each of us has a different personality (and it's amazing). As for getting noticed: in my opinion if that's all the blogger wants, then they might get disappointed very quickly. If blogging is not their passion, they leave it very fast. It's great to stick around and connect though! I love the community :)

Oh my gosh, Nadia, this is one of the best blogging-related posts I've ever read! So many helpful tips, thank you so much for sharing these!! :) Inspired by your lovely post, I actually went on and changed my blog e-mail to something more generic and blog related. I was using my personal e-mail (with my full name in it) before, but you are right, I think being professional is key, and I decided to create a new one, so thank you so much for the tip! :) <3 <3 I already have a contact tab, and I personally think that another good thing to include in it is a little disclaimer about working with sponsored brands - it's better than including it at the bottom of every sponsored post, imho. x And I honestly cannot believe that a new blog is created every half a second... What?!?! I actually think that's kinda awesome! I never, ever saw other bloggers as 'competition', but rather as wonderful and supportive friends, such as yourself!! <3 Blogging IS NOT a competition, there is room for everyone - I read that somewhere once and it stuck with me since. :) x Thanks for sharing another perfect post, my dear, you are a true inspiration!!! <3 <3 <3

Couldn't agree more with what you said, hon. Honesty is everything and timing is always right. Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it, love!

I'm excited for the next post, and I wish this was something that written about more, because when I did my first collaboration with a brand, I didn't really know how to handle it "properly".
ReplyDeleteI totally feel you on how nice an email is when the author has actually done their work, I've gotten quite a few emails and comments addressed to "Angela", though my name is literally in the title! "Hello dear" seems to be quite common as well.
Staying tuned for your next post! (:

So glad you enjoyed this post and hopefully read Part 2 as well, hon.
DeleteThe way we approach the brands or they approach us is unique and different every time but I strongly believe that no one cancelled respect and honesty :)
Really appreciate your lovely comment <3

Great tips Nadia! I don't think the numbers/stats are very important but on a business perspective they really matter. I also don't think it's important to try and get noticed; it would definitely be nice though to be noticed haha

Thanks, Vicky :) I think when getting noticed becomes a #1 goal, it might come across that way, get too "in your face" and the blogger is risking to lose even what they had. It's great whenever those numbers grow but it's not the point. Even big brands do notice great bloggers. I am a strong believer in that ;)

You've made some very good points.. Miel ;) haha! Seriously though, your greatest tip in my opinion was pointing out quality over quantity. When I started blogging, I was keen to push out posts regardless of whether I was 100% content with them. Rating quality higher than quantity is something I reckon bloggers learn in time :) Once again, great points and I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Great tips! It really is staggering how many blogs both already exist and are created each day. In addition to these tips, I think that besides working hard and producing great content, it is so important to also engage with your community and be pro-active and reach out to brands yourself as well.
ReplyDeleteRae | Love from Berlin
I agree with you, Rae. Engaging and staying on top of things is so important. Yup, I definitely support the idea of reaching out to brands. It won't hurt to write that email or leave a little DM ;)

I agree with every single word hun!! (I'm loving catching up with your blog haha).
ReplyDeleteI've seen some people start blogging to make money and then they stop because it's a long process. It's a real shame because blogging is meant to be fun. Every day you are growing your own blog.
I started my blog to raise more awareness over real-life situations and now I slowly want to add beauty, and other topics in. I know I've wanted to do it all but we can't do everything over night haha! I blog because it's fun and I really enjoy it. I wouldn't ever have the mindset of just making money out of blogging because you can really see the difference in the work. It's a shame that people still do that.
Being able to engage with your community, give back and focus on your own content is very important. We all shouldn't get to focused on the numbers of things.
A really good post hun! Really enjoyed reading it :)

You pointed out such truth, hon. I have actually seen quite a number of bloggers giving up quickly especially the ones that started at the very same time as me. Then again, must get those priorities straight and re-think why the blog was started in the first place. I love the messages in your blog, opinions you discuss and topics you raise. If it's something that resonates with you, that is incredible and keep doing your thing! :)
DeleteSo thankful for a lovely comment like that!!

This is a great post hun, I started blogging a long time ago and have finally landed at Blog A Book a good couple of years ago. When I started it was all about the books and has only recently moved on - still feel like a newb and working full time doesn't help! Still gonna do my thing though! Your blog is awesome x
ReplyDeleteGreat post! So well written....and so true. We need to be honest with our readers and we should also question ourselves from time to make sure we're going the right way.

This is such a good post and such an interesting idea! I love that you're constantly helping your fellow bloggers! The fact that your tips focus on how to be happy with your style and proud of you content before trying to get brands to work with you is really nice! I think it's so easy to forget why you started writing and get carried away in a world where these type of new jobs are becoming so popular everyday! Staying true to yourself is definitely the best thing to do! Thanks for writing this, sweetie! xx
