I love how so many amazing people on Twitter can become an inspiration source. The muse for Blogging Tips: Part 1 - How To Get Noticed By Brands and today's Part 2 - How To Work With Brands came to me after reading a message. One lovely blogger sent me a DM and asked if I got an email from so-and-so company because "it looks like everyone else did". I told her that I had been contacted by them but not planning to go any further. While there are many ways we can collaborate with businesses and brands, every blogger needs to establish for themselves what route they are willing to take. While one can "make" you, the other one might "break" you. Some might say there's no right or wrong in the ever-changing blogosphere as it's evolving non-stop. Others might reminisce about the "good ol' times" of blogging. Nevertheless, bloggers today (either one wants it or not) are influencers and our voice matters. Working with brands is almost an essential part of showing that voice - in the most honest and genuine way - with the aim to display your expertise, improve your knowledge and skills, share and help. In my last week's post here I attempted to remind us all why you started blogging and how to go down the road of getting noticed with the right motivation behind it. Next move is to learn how to work with brands and businesses in order to help you to represent YOUR brand better and to be a respectful and trust-worthy professional.
We all have heard the old story about a rude and unprofessional blogger on one side and not the most polite and arrogant PR Coordinator on the other. You wouldn't want to be in either camp or receiving end. Without making any excuses (age, status, popularity, self-confidence or the lack of it and million others), remember that any outreach has to be personal, approached with respect and appreciation.
We are insanely busy. Period. Even if you're a (very lucky) full-time blogger, you still have other commitments. So far I have personally connected only with one lovely lady who could call blogging her main and only job. No matter what age you are, whether you go to school or uni, work full-time or if you're a wife and/or a mother, there are gazillions other responsibilities on top of that which you probably have to take care of. But! Not only your email has to sound professional (I mentioned it here in Tip #4) but also you need to check it. Daily. Sometimes it's not easy to get back to everyone right away. It's OK to take a bit of time to think an offer over, browse the suggested website, check out the products and evaluate. Make sure your email is included in your contact form and is a part of your Twitter/Instagram/Facebook profile. If no one is reaching out, take the first step and present yourself to the PR world. Next couple of tips will help you to do it in the best way possible. Before I even start gushing over building your media kit, let's go back to the basics. How do you start or finish an email? Is it formal or informal? The writing style you are using and the words you choose DO matter. Before you address the brand, it's good to do some research. Find out the name of the person you're contacting (if possible) or brush up your knowledge about the company. Look up online how to write formal letters - it should help you get started. Now, as for the media kit, if you don't have one, make sure to start creating it right after you finish reading this post. Media kit is able speak volumes when it comes to brand/blogger cooperation. It should include: 1) brief intro about you and your blog, 2) your social media icons and updated following, 3) blog reach stats such as Monthly Page Views, Monthly Unique and Return Visitors, Average Bounce Rate (Google Analytics is your bestie), 4) previous collaborations and links to those posts, 5) your contacts (blog URL, email, other social media channel links and 6) price list for the services your blog offers (optional). I personally wouldn't include prices but I know some bloggers prefer to get that across right off the bat. Important tip: if you are a new blogger, try to include the stats that will be able to show your progress and represent you positively. Instead of Monthly Unique Visitors you might want to highlight how your Instagram or Twitter following has boomed.
Either you are getting back to the brand or taking courage to contact them for the first time, writing a brief "cover letter" of an email and attaching your media kit is not enough. But here comes the fun part - IDEAS. That's when those numbers (stats and followers) can easily be overpowered. Your high-quality content and your fresh out-of-the-box ideas get their chance to shine. What is it that attracts you to this particular company? Do you use / Have you ever used their products or services? Are you passionate about the brand? Express your genuine interest and suggest a few fun ideas that still work in sync with your blog.
Now we get to that "make it or break it" point. Keeping it professional, what do you reply to a collaboration offer? While it might sound like a no-brainer, you need to be careful who you agree to work with. As much as it is oh-so-tempting to say yes to a sponsored post, ask yourself these questions:
1) Does this product interest me?/Have I tried it?/Am I excited about it?/Do I trust it or believe in it?
2) Does this product agree with my blog?/Is it relevant?/Does it represent my blog well?
3) Would this product interest my readers?/Is it something they could relate to or enjoy?
If you answer "YES" to each of these, then go ahead and agree to that offer. If you are in doubt or you know it won't "look good" (aka fake advertising) and you are only doing it for the money, then it might be better to pass. In a case with a sponsored post you lose those few $ now but you don't bring your blog's reputation down. The story is different with the unpaid product reviews: you get a product you know you will love or you take a risk testing out something new. The positive side of it is that you get to share your genuine opinion which would be extremely helpful to others. As for the wishlist, I would only do the one I actually believe in. Avoid false advertising at all cost. Being money-hungry or hunting after freebies won't get any blogger very far. Brands wouldn't want to deal with that kind of person. Followers will be able to tell the difference between a " so you" post and phony promotion. Stick to what you FEEL and KNOW would be ultimately right to do for your blog, its progress and future.
I hope you enjoyed Part 2 as much as Part 1 and that it was helpful in your blogging journey.
Even if you think you got this, it's still a great reminder to "filter" everything that comes your way.
At the end of the day, the right choices ultimately get us closer and closer to our dreams :)
P.S.
The main aim behind writing these kind of posts is to take us all (newbies and experienced one) back to where it all started, the core reason why you joined the blogosphere - your blog and your voice.
We are the influencers.
On a small or a large scale.
Therefore, I hope I could help us all (especially those new to blogging)
to avoid most common (and often underestimated) traps and mistakes,
to learn the basics of how to connect with brands while being respectful and polite
and to represent the worldwide blogging community in a good light.
Your voice matters.

Another great and super helpful post! Your series comes just at the right time for me - I was lucky enough to be contacted by a brand that is a perfect for my blog (as in something I would write anyway). But it's so me new to me and I want it to work out, so reading posts like this makes it easier for me to know what to expect and how to communicate with the brand.

These are super helpful tips! I also did a similiar post except mine was simply my own experience of what I do and how I do it. I love your professionalism tip, but I would say that some brands nowadays just like a simple tweet or comment on their Instagrams. Sometimes I come off too "robotic" when I send all of my info via email so formally, so I'd say interacting beforehand on social is a good call! xx adaatude.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for a lovely comment and your tip, girl :) It does make sense and I have done it informally before. But then again, I get a DM asking to email them with all the info they require. I guess it might depend on the brand. Thanks for pointing it out though ;)

I dont email many PR people haha but your 3 P's are so helpful. Definitely something to think about next time, it's always so awkward when you first start sending those emails, so this helped so much!! Thank you XX
ReplyDeleteSo glad I could help, Sophie. It's not easy to know how to correctly approach a certain business. Some prefer an informal tweet and some need that formal email with all the stats and ideas. It also depends what you are personally comfortable doing. I'd say stay yourself in all aspects of brand/blogger collaboration :)

I found this so helfpful Nadia thank you so much for sharing! I have absolutely no idea about any of this kind of stuff but I would certainly love the opportunity to work with brands I love in the future, so it's extremely beneficial to get an idea of what to expect and how to approach it all. Thank you so much, Katie. I am glad you found this useful :) Sometimes many new bloggers make the mistake of choosing the wrong "strategy" when it comes to brand/blogger collaboration but I guess it's simply a learning process. It's always great to get tips from others, I think. Sharing and supporting one another is important.

These are such helpful tips to keep in mind when working with brands! I've been contacted by a few brands (that I usually respond no to considering they're just looking for cheap, false advertising) but I've haven't thought of pitching ideas to brands yet! Another great post hun! Had me captivated all the way through! Love your 3 "p"s rule I completely agree. I also agree that you shouldn't really agree to work with a company if you have zero interest in their products and just after the freebie. You've got to "want to try" something or really like it to be able to write an honest post. I've had a company in the past contact me regarding clothing; offered me 40% off a piece of their clothing to review. Politely turned them down for two reasons: 1) I was unable to find something on their site I "fell in love with, or needed to have" and 2) was simply because I wasn't prepared to spend money (discount or not) on something I didn't have that much interest in. That and the fact I didn't feel passionate about writing a post about it!
ReplyDeleteLove Hannah xx
HannahHawes.blogspot.co.uk
Huge thanks for your kindness and support, Hannah ;) Glad you liked this post honey and enjoyed my tips, including the 3P rule (I came up with that spontaneously but thought it applied perfectly to what I believe). I had a very similar offer to the one you mentioned you had got. I didn't like a single thing and even though it's a lovely offer on their behalf, I couldn't proceed with that collab. There were so many other instances but I couldn't list or name them all (mostly sue to the fact that I wouldn't want to shame anyone). I absolutely agree with you - writing about something you're passionate about IS the key :)
Deletexox
This was such a useful post Nadia! I totally agree that you should only work with brands if they fit your niche and would be genuinely interesting to your readers! I have stumbled across some blogs that are literally just a plethora of non-related sponsored posts and it is a huuge turn off!
ReplyDeleteAs for the media kit, I had never thought of putting links to previous collabs in, but this is such a great idea! I shall add it now :)
Thanks so much for this post- it was really helpful!
Rachel xx
http://www.thedailyluxe.net
Thank you for your lovely feedback, Rach. I completely agree with you that a blogger should define what they actually love and what brands would be "relatable" and then go ahead with collaborations. Sponsored posts or product reviews can be incredible to read if there's a personal connection to the blogger that I can detect (I hope you know what I mean). It all has to relate though.
DeleteGlad you found these tips helpful, hon. I'm sure your media kit is looking lovely! ;)

This is a really awesome post (especially for beginners) I personally have not started a media kit (my bad!) but thank you so much for highlighting it's importance. Once I get time I'll definitely have to start on that.

Thank you so much, sweetie. I agree, this post applies perfectly to beginners and could also be a great reminder to those of us who have been around for a while. I am sure such knowledge does come with time and by making mistakes or learning from others not to make them :) The point is to filter what we do, be polite and keep working ;)
DeleteGirlie, hope you find time to get that media kit sorted. But then again, there are other ways to get your stats and info across and if they work for you better, that is perfectly fine. I always love to look for new ways to do things :D
Thanks so much for your feedback, hon. I really appreciate it! <3

Such a good and informative post. I only work with brands that are relevant to my blog. I only want to provide 100% truthful content for my readers, so I will turn down a lot of brands simply because they have nothing to do with my blog. Recently I have been contacted by hair extentions company and had to say 'no' to them, because my blog is lifestyle related. Also, I once was contacted by this very rude lady from a brand that wanted me to do a post about their brand. I am not going to promote a brand that treats me poorly and gives me phrases like "what you don't understand?! I already explained you" :/
ReplyDelete-Leta | The Nerdy Me
I couldn't agree more with you on the importance of working with brands that are relevant to your blog, hon. You had some very unfortunate experience with that rude lady and it's better to reply politely that you are not able to proceed with the offer and forget about that instance for good. Ironically, as for the hair extensions, that is going to be my next post!! Fortunately enough, this is 100% relevant to my blog and this is something I LOVE, therefore, happy to share my impressions from such a collab :)

I haven't worked with many brands so far, mostly because I am not interested in monetizing my blog just for the sake of money. I secretly laugh when I sit on my laptop and my bloglovin feed is suddenly flooded with wish lists from a shop I turned down a few weeks ago. You can really see the amount of eMail they write in order to get some covering on blogs.
ReplyDeleteLinda, Libra, Loca: Beauty, Baby and Backpacking
I completely understand and support your standpoint, Anne. I wouldn't work with brands for the sake of making something. I do, however, find cooperation with brands, which I am passionate about, absolutely fascinating! Plus, it's always great to share a great product if you genuinely believe in it.
DeleteAs for the mass-advertising, well someone has to do it and will do it (even if they couldn't care less about the brand or the product) but that is why we need similar posts to help us make the right decisions. At the end of the day, it's all up to that particular person and their goals for their blog.
Thanks for pitching in, hon :)
xox
This is such a great post, hun! You have great points, especially the last one! I got connected by many companies who want me to promote their prom/wedding dresses, which I had no interest on doing. I don't want to write a post just to get some money or a product that I am not interested in. Also I know that my readers won't be interested in, so even though earning money might be appealing, if it is not related to my blog, it will always be "nay"! xx
ReplyDeletewww.elabellaworld.com
Thank you very much, sweetie. I had to leave "best" for last ;) The power of a "no" is underestimated. Earning money is an appealing prospect but ultimately, you're right - if you have no faith in the product and your post will be "pushed", anyone would be able to tell something's not quite right. That's why you're right - if it's not related to what you blog about, then it's a no-go. However, we can't judge so what can be one man's trash can easily be another man's treasure.

I don't have a media kit yet but I've been meaning to start working on one... For weeks... This weekend I'll deffo need to sit down and just get it done, because you are right, it is such a helpful little thing to have and makes you look so much more professional. :) <3 Also, I really like your very last tip. You are right, we are all influencers in some capacity, and I think that once you bring your reputation down by doing false advertising/promoting a brand you don't really believe in (and it usually really shows when bloggers do that, tbh), it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to re-build that reputation. It can be quite difficult to know which offers to go for, though, especially when you're new to the blogging world. I remember my very first blog collab offer I received - it was from one of those Chinese clothing companies. I got so excited! I thought 'Wow, someone noticed me!' and ALMOST went for it, but then I sat down, thought about it and realised that it wouldn't have been a good move. x

Great tips! I've had my blog for over a year and a half and it's grown, but I feel like I don't have enough of a following or enough hits (as I'm looking through my own Google Analytics) to garner opportunities to work with brands. I would still like to try though. Should I try and contact the companies anyway? The brands I've been contacted for were usually to promote their software (like a 24 Hour Fall Guide for my hometown to promote the Eventbrite management software) but that was about it. Please let me know. Thanks!

Very useful and helpful tips! I haven't set up a media kit yet but that's definitely next on my list. I wanted to get my views and blog better and higher before starting. I definitely agree with answering e-mails in a timely manner but real life can catch up to you.

This post was so incredibly helpful!! I really appreciate the tips. This kind of information is hard to come by for new bloggers, but so valuable. I agree that it's important to only work with brands that you truly admire. Do you have any advice for how to say no to a collaboration without seeming rude?
